Ukrzaliznytsia’s Latest Passenger Railcars

According to Главком: Ukrzaliznytsia has taken delivery of its first six new passenger railcars, manufactured domestically in 2026. These units are part of a 100-car contract signed in 2025 with the Kryukiv Railway Car Building Works. The total value of the agreement is approximately UAH 6.5 billion, funded through the state budget. Deliveries will occur in phases through May 2028, with 60 railcars expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Specifications and Innovations

The contract covers production of:

  • 88 modern compartment cars,
  • 7 inclusive cars designed for wheelchair users,
  • 5 next-generation cars with a service life extended by 20 years.

Each new railcar is equipped with air conditioning and batteries. The first units have already arrived in Kyiv and will enter service as part of a new flagship train that Ukrzaliznytsia plans to unveil on April 28.

In addition to these passenger cars, Ukrzaliznytsia is also adding six new children’s compartment cars to its fleet this spring. The first three children’s cars have already been deployed on the Lviv-Odesa and Kharkiv-Ivano-Frankivsk routes. Starting May 1, women-only compartments will be introduced on three new routes: Kharkiv-Odesa, Lviv-Odesa, and Lviv-Kyiv. The network of women-only compartments will now cover 18 routes, enhancing comfort for female travelers.

More than 150 Ukrainian companies are involved in manufacturing the new railcars, including businesses from frontline and relocated regions. This underscores the importance of supporting domestic production amid current challenges.

Receiving these new railcars is a significant step for Ukrzaliznytsia, as it not only modernizes the passenger fleet but also supports a national manufacturer during economic difficulties.

Engaging a large number of Ukrainian firms in railcar production helps boost the domestic economy and create new jobs. Furthermore, the introduction of inclusive and children’s cars reflects a growing focus on the needs of diverse passenger groups, which could positively impact service quality in passenger transport.

In addition to the newly delivered passenger railcars, Ukrzaliznytsia is enhancing its offerings with the introduction of children's carriages designed to create a whimsical travel experience. These six new compartments, styled like a fairy tale forest, aim to provide a unique atmosphere for young passengers, further contributing to the modernization of the rail service.
