The Czech government has approved a package of changes to immigration legislation that includes stricter residency rules and assistance for Ukrainian refugees. This is explained in Prague as a fight against the abuse of social support and a necessity to strengthen control over the status of temporary protection. This is reported by Reuters.

What rules for Ukrainians are being changed in the Czech Republic

Czech Minister of the Interior Lubomir Metnar stated that new rules should prevent people who do not actually reside in the country from receiving assistance.

Among the main changes:

  1. strengthening control over humanitarian payments;

  2. stricter rules for extending the residence permit;

  3. cancellation of exemptions for Ukrainian cars regarding technical inspections.

The Czech Republic also wants to end the practice of preferential treatment for vehicles with Ukrainian registration.

Why the Czech Republic is revising its refugee policy

As of March 2026, there were about 385 thousand Ukrainian refugees in the Czech Republic.

According to the EU, the Czech Republic remains one of the countries with the highest number of Ukrainian refugees per capita among all EU member states.

The government coalition is currently under pressure from right-wing political forces advocating for stricter immigration policies.

At the same time, Czech businesses continue to actively recruit Ukrainians to work in the service sector, construction, and industry.

Separately, it has been stated in the Czech Republic that the EU is already discussing a possible narrowing of protection programs after March 2027, particularly for men of conscription age.

It is worth noting that the Czech Ministry of the Interior has prepared significant changes to immigration legislation that could substantially affect Ukrainians with temporary protection. Among the main innovations is the possible automatic termination of status after 30 days of absence from the country.
