Plan for Observing Defenders' Memorial Day

According to Главком: On May 6, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved a plan for events marking Defenders' Memorial Day, observed annually on August 29. At 9:00 AM on that day, a nationwide minute of silence will be held, and state flags will be lowered on government buildings, diplomatic missions, and military units. Television channels will also interrupt their broadcasts to display an image of a sunflower, which has become the symbol of this day.

Scheduled Activities

The planned events include:

• a nationwide memorial campaign called Sunflower;
• a ceremonial flower-laying at Mykhailivska Square in Kyiv near the Wall of Memory;
• flower-laying at the National Military Memorial Cemetery;
• exhibitions of destroyed military equipment and weapons from Russian armed forces in Kyiv and other cities;
• memorial services for fallen defenders in religious organizations.

Regional administrations and the Kyiv City State Administration are required to develop their own event plans by July 15. Throughout August and September, national-patriotic education activities will take place across the regions. Additionally, the first lesson of the 2026/2027 school year will be dedicated to honoring the memory of defenders in all schools. The Ministry of Education, together with the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, will prepare thematic methodological materials.

The sunflower flower became the official symbol of August 29 in memory of the events near Ilovaisk in August 2014, where 366 Ukrainian soldiers were killed. During those events, 429 Ukrainian soldiers were wounded, and 300 were taken prisoner. Defenders' Memorial Day in Ukraine is observed annually on August 29, a date established by a decree of President Zelensky in 2019. The Commander-in-Chief published a full list of names of the fallen and missing Ukrainian soldiers near Ilovaisk, which includes 272 names.

Commemorating Defenders' Memorial Day is a key part of Ukraine's national memory and honoring the fallen soldiers who fought for the country's independence. The planned events aim not only to remember those who died but also to strengthen patriotic spirit among the population, especially the youth.
