The government has changed the rules for electricity procurement: what this means for tariffs
Changes in the rules of electricity procurement
According to ХВИЛЯ: The Government of Ukraine has changed the rules for electricity procurement for JSC 'Ukrenergo' in order to reduce the risk of increasing electricity transmission tariffs. According to the new changes, the Cabinet has updated the mechanism by which 'Ukrenergo' purchases electricity to cover technological losses, which may positively impact pricing policy.
With the new mechanism, 'Ukrenergo' has received an additional tool for electricity procurement. Now, the operator can purchase electricity not only in conditions where prices change rapidly and significantly but also at special auctions. This new approach allows 'Ukrenergo' to obtain electricity at more predictable and often lower prices.
The Minister of Economy of Ukraine, Yuliya Svyryidenko, noted: 'We have changed the mechanism by which 'Ukrenergo' can purchase electricity to cover technological losses. Now the operator will be able to buy it not only where prices change rapidly and significantly but also at special auctions – at more predictable and often lower prices.'
These changes may contribute to the stability of electricity tariffs for end consumers.
Impact of the new rules on the energy market
These changes in the rules of electricity procurement may have a significant impact on Ukraine's energy market. In particular, the new mechanism allows 'Ukrenergo' to manage costs more effectively, which in turn may reduce the financial burden on consumers.
It is also important to note that the stability of electricity tariffs is critically important for the country's economic development, especially in the context of global changes and challenges in the energy sector.
