Remains of OUN Leader Andriy Melnyk Returned to Ukraine
Andriy Melnyk and Sofia Fedak-Melnyk Repatriated for Reburial
According to Главком: On May 21, the remains of Andriy Melnyk, the second leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), and his wife Sofia Fedak-Melnyk were brought back to Ukraine for reburial. This effort is part of a broader initiative to establish a national Pantheon of Heroes, as previously announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The return of these prominent Ukrainians marks a significant step in restoring historical memory and honoring their legacy.
Melnyk, a colonel in the Ukrainian People's Army, assumed leadership of the OUN in 1938 following the death of Yevhen Konovalets. He was known for his dedicated service to the Ukrainian nation and unwavering belief in Ukraine's future. In her remarks, Iryna Vereshchuk stated that
“the life of Andriy Melnyk is an example of selfless service to the Ukrainian nation and an unyielding faith in Ukraine's future.”
The presidential initiative to create a national Pantheon of Heroes involves repatriating historical figures buried abroad. Vereshchuk added that this initiative is a vital component of forging new traditions of national memory and restoring historical justice.
“We are bringing back not only prominent Ukrainian figures buried overseas. We are returning to Ukraine its historical memory, its continuity, and its heroes,”
she noted.
Significance of the Initiative
President Zelenskyy also underscored the importance of this effort in his address. “This is something Ukrainians and Ukraine have long hoped to begin. Returning to our land, to our independent sovereign state-and with due honor-those who fought for Ukraine, who wanted independence for Ukraine,” the president remarked. He emphasized that repatriating Ukrainian heroes who championed the cause of independence is a crucial step toward restoring historical justice.
Thus, the return of Andriy Melnyk and Sofia Fedak-Melnyk's remains serves as a powerful symbol for Ukrainian society, which seeks to reclaim its historical memory and honor those who fought for the nation's independence. This event could act as a catalyst for further initiatives aimed at recognizing and repatriating other significant figures from Ukrainian history, fostering greater national consciousness and unity among Ukrainians.
The return of Andriy Melnyk and his wife is not just a significant moment for their families but also highlights the ongoing efforts to honor Ukraine's historical figures.
