Call for Change Within 'Servant of the People' Faction

According to Главком: MP Olha Vasilevska-Smagliuk has called for a change in the operational leadership of the ruling 'Servant of the People' faction, specifically targeting the position of Deputy Head, currently held by Andrii Motovylovets. She cites persistent difficulties in securing votes in parliament, which she attributes directly to Motovylovets's ineffective performance in his role. This internal dispute highlights the challenges faced by Ukraine's largest parliamentary faction in maintaining party discipline.

Vasilevska-Smagliuk, herself a member of the faction, argued that the deputy head must be someone skilled in negotiating with fellow MPs and building consensus. She contends that Motovylovets shows insufficient commitment to these core duties.

'Motovylovets simply walks around and says: 'You need to vote for this, you need to vote for that....' In reality, the ability to gather votes in the chamber is demonstrated only by David,' she stated, emphasizing that the outcome of votes depends on the faction's head, David Arakhamia.

Past Collaboration with Motovylovets

Vasilevska-Smagliuk also referenced her prior experience working with Motovylovets when he headed the 'Servant of the People' Kyiv regional branch in 2021.

'When Motovylovets headed the Kyiv regional branch of the 'servants of the people' in 2021, we agreed on a model for managing this branch, which he simply abandoned and decided he could run on his own,' the MP noted.

She claimed that due to Motovylovets's incompetence, the Kyiv regional branch is now being exploited by rival political parties, including:

  • Maibakh (For the Future)
  • European Solidarity
  • Opposition Platform - For Life
  • Fatherland

Vasilevska-Smagliuk's call for change underscores organizational problems within the faction and the challenge of rallying votes in parliament. Expressing concern, she indicated a willingness to discuss her stance with other MPs, remarking: 'Maybe I am blind, I will ask other people's deputies.'

This situation points to internal discord within 'Servant of the People,' which could impact its ability to function effectively in the Verkhovna Rada. A leadership reshuffle could be a crucial step toward improving communication and coordination among deputies, potentially leading to better voting results and the faction's public image. Whether this leads to concrete action, however, depends on the reaction of other faction members and their readiness to engage with her proposal.

In light of the ongoing internal disputes within the 'Servant of the People' faction, it is essential to consider other pressing issues affecting parliamentary stability. Recently, calls for an investigation into parliamentary leaks have emerged, highlighting another layer of dysfunction that could disrupt legislative processes and hinder effective governance.
