Spintronic p-bit Makes Its Debut

According to НВ — Техно: On June 4 at 11:00 AM, a collaborative research team from Tohoku University and the National Institute of Standards and Technology introduced the world's first spintronic p-bit fabricated on a silicon chip. This groundbreaking device demonstrated two essential p-bit characteristics: stochastic switching between states and the ability to control the average output signal value.

The chip was manufactured using standard semiconductor fabrication processes. Specifically, the transistors and lower interconnect layers were built using SkyWater Technology's 130-nanometer CMOS process. Superparamagnetic nanodevices and top electrodes were also integrated onto the chip.

Testing and Technological Promise

During testing, the chip showed that its output voltage fluctuated randomly over time-a defining trait of spintronic p-bits. Additionally, researchers were able to adjust the average output signal by modulating the input voltage. The study was led by scientist Yong Chu Yeon, who emerged as a key figure in this significant development.
