Supreme Court Upholds Lower Courts’ Verdicts

According to НАЗК: The Supreme Court’s Civil Cassation Chamber has upheld previous rulings from lower courts that declared the assets of a police officer’s family in the Kharkiv region unlawful. These assets include a luxury Lexus LX 450D SUV and property valued at more than 4 million UAH, including a partial ownership stake in an apartment. Crucially, the court found that the origin of these assets could not be legally justified.

Investigation of the Assets

The National Agency for Prevention of Corruption (NAPC) discovered that the police officer and his wife used an apartment in Kharkiv and a vehicle registered under the wife’s name. A thorough review of the couple’s income and expenses revealed insufficient legitimate earnings or savings to acquire these possessions.

The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office filed a lawsuit against the family based on evidence gathered by the NAPC, the State Bureau of Investigations, and prosecutors working with NABU detectives. The High Anti-Corruption Court ruled in favor of the lawsuit, a decision that was then upheld by the court’s appellate chamber. The Supreme Court rejected the family’s cassation appeal, making the ruling final and binding.

This ruling highlights Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption, especially within law enforcement agencies, by demonstrating that even officials in powerful positions are not immune from accountability.

As public demand for transparency in government conduct grows, this case serves as a precedent encouraging adherence to legal and ethical standards among public servants.

This ruling aligns with Ukraine's broader efforts to address corruption within law enforcement, as seen in another high-profile case involving the former head of SBU's Cyber Security unit. The legal proceedings against him for unlawful enrichment further emphasize the government’s commitment to ensuring accountability among officials.
