Explosion Targets Russian General Linked to Bucha Atrocities at Military Garrison
Blast in Khabarovsk Krai
According to Главком: On April 28, an explosion rocked the Russian military garrison in the settlement of Knyaze-Volkonskoye-1, located in Khabarovsk Krai. The attack specifically targeted Major General Azatbek Omurbekov, who has commanded the 392nd District Training Center for junior specialists of Russia's Eastern Military District since 2023. The explosive device was placed inside a mailbox on the staircase landing of a military unit.
Omurbekov previously led the 64th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade during the occupation of Bucha in 2022. Ukrainian and international investigations have linked his unit to mass civilian killings; over a thousand residents of the Bucha district were murdered during the occupation, with many crimes attributed to the brigade's actions. As of the explosion, no information has been released about Omurbekov's condition, and Russian authorities have not confirmed the incident, which was immediately classified.
Sanctions and Aftermath
Omurbekov is currently under sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union, and several other countries. This explosion comes amid other notable developments, including the recent death of Russian national Yuri Gritsenko, known as the Zelenograd maniac, who joined the war against Ukraine after leaving prison. Gritsenko was assigned to the Storm Z unit but later transferred to a medical evacuation platoon due to health issues.
The attack may reflect growing tensions within Russia's military structures, particularly among those involved in the conflict in Ukraine. Given Omurbekov's connection to war crimes in Ukraine, this could represent an act of retaliation. How Russian authorities handle the incident and subsequent investigations could impact internal politics and troop morale. Monitoring these events is crucial for understanding the state of the Russian military and its influence on the ongoing war in Ukraine.
