Russian Defense Plant 'Progress' Struck by Explosions for Second Time in a Week
Explosions and Fire at the 'Progress' Plant
According to Главком: Explosions and a fire occurred overnight on February 12 at the 'Progress' plant in Michurinsk, located in Russia's Tambov region. This marks the second attack on this defense enterprise within a single week. The 'Progress' facility specializes in developing and manufacturing high-precision instrumentation used in Russian aircraft, helicopters, and missile systems. These incidents are part of a broader pattern of strikes on military-industrial targets deep inside Russia.
Previous Attacks and Their Consequences
This follows an earlier attack on February 7 against the Redkinsky Research Chemical Plant in the Tver region. Furthermore, on January 10, two other Russian regions-Volgograd and Krasnodar-were also targeted by drone attacks. In Volgograd, a fire was recorded at an oil refinery, while airport operations were disrupted in Krasnodar. Simultaneously, the city of Belgorod and its surrounding region experienced a blackout following a missile strike and explosions.
The 'Progress' plant produces a wide range of critical instruments, including:
- Gyroscopic devices for stabilization
- Autopilot systems
- Navigation course indicators
- Angular rate sensors
- Other components for flight and navigation systems
In light of recent events, Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the Belgorod region, stated that he would not publish a detailed schedule for restoration work to prevent follow-up strikes.
The attacks on Russian defense enterprises highlight escalating tensions and potential security threats in the region. Such incidents could significantly impact the country's production capabilities within the defense sector, which may, in turn, affect military readiness. The local authorities' response, particularly the refusal to disclose repair timelines, underscores the severity of the situation and an effort to avert further attacks.
