In the Czech Republic, some politicians have again called for tightening the rules for Ukrainian refugees. Among the proposals is the cancellation of temporary protection for men of conscription age and new restrictions for cars with Ukrainian license plates. This was stated by a representative of the SPD party, speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Tomio Okamura.

Czech Republic proposes to cancel protection for men from Ukraine

The leader of the 'Freedom and Direct Democracy' party, Tomio Okamura, stated the need to revise the conditions for Ukrainians' stay in the Czech Republic.

According to him, the country's authorities are allegedly negotiating with the EU regarding the possible termination of temporary protection for men of conscription age from Ukraine.

Okamura also advocated for a phased cancellation of temporary protection status for all Ukrainian refugees. One of the arguments made by the politician was the travels of some Ukrainians back home during their stay in the Czech Republic.

Czech Republic prepares stricter law for foreigners

The SPD party is also working on a new version of the law on foreigners. It is expected that the document will provide for stricter rules for staying in the country.

Among the possible changes:

  • new requirements for Ukrainians with temporary protection;
  • strictest rules for cars with Ukrainian license plates;
  • enhanced control of vehicle technical inspections.

At the same time, the Czech Republic cannot independently cancel the temporary protection mechanism. Such decisions are made only at the level of the European Union.

Currently, EU countries have already agreed to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 2027, and the existing rules do not provide for separate restrictions for men of conscription age.

In recent months, the topic of Ukrainian refugees has been increasingly used in political discussions in the Czech Republic, especially against the backdrop of migration debates and the rise in popularity of right-wing parties.

For Ukrainians in the Czech Republic, this means increased uncertainty and concern due to possible changes in residence rules, although currently no decisions have been made to cancel temporary protection.
