Parliamentary Address by Vladyslav Heraskevych

According to Главком: Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych will speak before the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, on February 26. He was invited by lawmakers to deliver an address from the parliamentary podium, with the invitation receiving support from 205 deputies. This event follows his disqualification from the 2026 Winter Olympics due to a helmet he wore. The case highlights the complex intersection of sports, politics, and personal expression during times of conflict.

The Verkhovna Rada had previously appealed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to support Heraskevych and permit him to compete wearing his 'helmet of remembrance.' This helmet featured images of Ukrainian athletes killed by Russian occupiers. However, the IOC barred Heraskevych from competing in the 2026 Games with this helmet, leading to his disqualification just before his first skeleton run.

Court of Arbitration for Sport Ruling

The Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed Heraskevych's appeal against the IOC, upholding the decision that his helmet violated the Olympic Charter and the Guidelines on the Expression of Views by Athletes. It is notable that the Ukrainian team concluded its participation in the 2026 Winter Olympics without winning any medals.

Heraskevych's parliamentary address is seen as a significant moment to raise awareness about the challenges Ukrainian athletes face on the international stage, particularly the restrictions they encounter during wartime. It also focuses attention on broader issues concerning freedom of expression in sports and the impact of geopolitics on athletic competition.
