Turkey on the brink of a water crisis: what awaits the country by 2050

Critical water shortage in Izmir and Istanbul
Туреччина стикається з серйозними проблемами водозабезпечення: прогнози на 2050 рік.

In Turkey, particularly in Istanbul and Izmir, the water crisis is escalating. The water level in the reservoirs that supply the country's largest cities has noticeably dropped in recent months. According to information from «Glavcom», this is evidenced by data from Euronews.

According to the Istanbul Water and Sewage Administration (ISKI), the water level in the reservoirs that provide water to Istanbul is only 21.87%. This is significantly lower than at the beginning of summer - 66.23%.

The water situation in Izmir is becoming critical

In Izmir, the water situation is also alarming. Water supply problems have been felt for a long time, and experts warn that the reserve water has now run out.

Professor Dogan Yashar from Dokuz Eylul University warns that the water level in Izmir's reservoirs has dropped to a critical level, and groundwater is also on the verge of depletion.

Turkey could become a water-scarce country

If the water situation in Turkey does not improve, the country could be included in the list of water-scarce nations, which already includes countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Somalia. This is a serious warning from experts who predict that by 2050, Turkey may face water supply issues.

The largest consumer of water in Turkey is agriculture, which utilizes up to 70% of water resources. The crisis is caused by global warming and increasing periods of drought.

Turkey has intensified its water supply problem in major cities like Istanbul and Izmir. The water level in the reservoirs supplying water to these cities has significantly decreased, posing a threat to the water supply for the population. Experts warn that if the situation does not improve, Turkey could become a country with insufficient water supply by 2050.
