Putin May Seek a Ceasefire, Predicts Former U.S. Ambassador Kurt Volker
Kurt Volker’s Assessment of the War Against Russia
According to ХВИЛЯ: Kurt Volker, a former U.S. ambassador to NATO, recently shared his views on the shifting dynamics of the war with Russia, noting that the 'balance of power' is gradually tipping in Ukraine’s favor. In an interview with Times Radio Drive, Volker dismissed the current peace negotiations as a farce, arguing that neither side expects meaningful outcomes. He added that Vladimir Putin will eventually recognize the heavy toll in lost territory, drained financial resources, and mounting casualties, which could drive him to pursue a truce.
Volker emphasized that Russia now stands without allies, while Ukraine continues to receive steadfast support from the European Union and other nations. He also highlighted Ukraine’s rapid advancements in military technology, including drones, counter-drone systems, and its own long-range strike capabilities.
“Russia’s vast territory is extremely difficult to defend. So when Ukraine deploys long-range weapons, they can reach Moscow, military bases, and industrial sites deep inside Russia. This affects both Russia’s military efforts and the psychology of the war,” said Kurt Volker.
Sanctions and Political Decisions
Regarding sanctions, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent extended Russia’s license to sell oil by 30 days, a move that has raised alarms among allies. 'This is a puzzling decision, to say the least,' Volker commented. He also argued that the negotiations have been designed to pressure Ukraine rather than Russia, and that this pattern is causing growing unease among European partners.
Furthermore, Volker criticized the Donald Trump administration’s approach to the conflict, particularly its withdrawal from a defense agreement with Canada and the cancellation of U.S. troop rotations to Poland. Poland, it should be noted, allocates the highest percentage of GDP to defense spending among NATO members.
“To be charitable, one could assume the Pentagon is hedging against a potential ground operation in Iran. But honestly-no one at the Pentagon has explained this,” Volker added.
Volker’s statements reflect a shifting geopolitical landscape where Western support for Ukraine is becoming increasingly crucial. As the conflict escalates and pressure mounts on Russia, future actions by international partners could significantly shape the war’s outcome. His assessment of the peace talks also underscores the lack of genuine effort from Russia to reach a compromise, which risks prolonging the conflict.
As the situation evolves, the implications of military aid become increasingly significant. Kurt Volker's insights on Russia's vulnerabilities highlight the shifting landscape, raising questions about potential assistance from allies. In a related context, the recent analysis on the shortage of Patriot missiles underscores how resource dynamics may open new avenues for support from Gulf states.
