More than half of Ukrainians in Germany have found jobs: how they succeeded

More than half of Ukrainians in Germany have found jobs
Понад 50% українців у Німеччині знайшли роботу: як їм це вдалося досягнути.

In Germany, the number of employed Ukrainians has significantly increased: over three years, the employment rate among working-age refugees rose from 16% to 51%. This is shown by a study from the Federal Institute for Demographic Research in Germany (BiB), published on November 4. As reported by DW.

What the study showed

The head of the study, Andreas Ette, explained that regular surveys of Ukrainians who have been in Germany since the start of the full-scale war demonstrate a gradual increase in their employment levels. In 2024, the study also included those who arrived during later waves of evacuation.

Job satisfaction has also improved: the share of those who are "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with their employment has increased from 87% in 2023 to 94% in 2025.

Families, future plans, and children

The study also focused on family circumstances. War and separation from partners have affected Ukrainian families: nearly 29% of women who left without their husbands are no longer in a relationship. The desire to stay in Germany depends on where the partner is located. Half of the women whose partners live in Germany want to stay permanently. A similar trend is observed in families with children.

Among children and teenagers, there are fewer who wish to stay in the country permanently compared to their parents. Although almost half of young Ukrainians assess their level of German as "good" or "very good," researchers emphasize that the language alone is not enough.

Indicators that influence integration

Data shows that key roles in employment and adaptation are played by:

  • language and integration courses
  • social contacts and community support
  • stable family circumstances
  • children's participation in extracurricular activities.

The German authorities actively invest in integration programs, and the labor market needs qualified workers, which supports the employment of Ukrainians.
