The Fall of Lieutenant Colonel Maksym Yemets

According to Главком: Ukrainian Lieutenant Colonel Maksym Yemets (call sign 'Raccoon') was killed in action on February 4, 2025, while defending his country on the Pokrovsk front in the Donetsk region. His death, caused by enemy artillery fire, was a significant loss for Ukraine. He was 31 years old, having been born on September 21, 1994, in the village of Staryi Kosiv, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. The Pokrovsk direction has been one of the most intense and critical sectors of the frontline in Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine.

Military Service and Honors

Maksym Yemets was educated at the Kosiv Boarding Gymnasium and the Stepan Granat Financial and Commercial Professional College in Ivano-Frankivsk. He completed leadership courses at the Odesa Military Academy in 2018, graduating as a junior lieutenant. His military career began in 2014 at age 19, and he served with distinction in several elite Ukrainian units:

  • The Aidar Battalion
  • The 54th Separate Reconnaissance Battalion
  • The 10th Mountain Assault Brigade 'Edelweiss'
  • The 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade named for King Danylo
  • The Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR)

From June 1, 2022, he commanded a motorized infantry battalion within the 10th Mountain Assault Brigade.

For his battlefield valor, Maksym Yemets was awarded the Order for Courage (3rd Class), the Medal For Military Service to Ukraine, and the Cross of Combat Merit (posthumously). He was posthumously honored with the title of Hero of Ukraine, the nation's highest award. His funeral was held at the Avenue of Heroes in Chukalivsky Cemetery. In 2025, a collection of his poetry titled 'Our Wartime Work and Reflections on the Eternal' was published.

His memory is honored nationwide. On January 29, 2026, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented the Order of the Golden Star to Yemets's mother in a ceremony at the Mariinsky Palace. He is survived by his mother Nadia, grandmother Maria, grandfather Valentyn, daughter Kvitoslava, and fiancée Oksana.

“I am ready to fight for my Homeland to the last drop of blood.”

The death of Maksym Yemets is another stark reminder of the sacrifices Ukrainian soldiers make in the fight for their country's independence. His service across multiple branches of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the recognition he earned for bravery underscore the vital personal contribution of each service member to the collective defense.
