The Death of Yan Vilkhovetskyi

According to Главком: Ukrainian soldier Yan Vilkhovetskyi was killed on September 15, 2022, during a Ukrainian counter-offensive near the village of Berestove in the Donetsk region. He was 31 years old, having been born on January 28, 1991, in Chernivtsi. His death resulted from mortar fire in the course of combat operations.

Vilkhovetskyi graduated from Chernivtsi Lyceum No. 17 'Success' and a vocational school before working at a bread factory. In 2016, he signed a contract and began his service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. For six years, he carried out combat missions in the Anti-Terrorist Operation/Joint Forces Operation zone in eastern Ukraine. Two weeks before Russia's full-scale invasion, his unit was deployed to the border with Belarus. From the first days of the war, he fought in the battles for Irpin, Hostomel, and Bucha in the Kyiv region, as well as in Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Sievierodonetsk in the Luhansk region. He served with the 8th Separate Mountain Assault Battalion of the 10th Mountain Assault Brigade.

Family and Legacy

Yan met his future wife, Maria, in 2011. Together they had a son, Sashko, and a daughter, Katrusia. Maria recalled their life together:

'We lived nine wonderful years together. I patiently waited for him to return from the ATO, knowing he could not simply stay at home, because Yan was a true patriot.' - Maria Vilkhovetska

She also noted that her husband had been through all the war's hotspots, with the fiercest fighting in Sievierodonetsk, where their unit was surrounded on all sides:

'But, thank God, Yan emerged alive from that cauldron as well.' - Maria Vilkhovetska

Yan Vilkhovetskyi participated in the Revolution of Dignity, the Anti-Terrorist Operation, and the full-scale war. Following his death, he was posthumously awarded the 'For the Glory of Chernivtsi' medal. The defender was laid to rest in the Alley of Glory in Chernivtsi. In his honor, the former Petrozavodska Street was renamed. His wife emphasized his character: 'He was a determined person who always stood his ground. My husband was always positive; no matter what happened, he looked for the good in everything.'

Yan is survived by his mother, wife, son, and daughter, who remember him as a courageous defender and a loving father.

His death marks another tragic chapter in the war in Ukraine, which has continued since 2014. His path from the Revolution of Dignity to frontline combat underscores the dedication and bravery of Ukrainian service members. The memory of heroes like Yan remains a vital part of the national consciousness for a nation continuing its fight for independence and territorial integrity.
