Ukraine's Fuel Reserves: A Matter of Weeks, Not Months
The State of Ukraine's Fuel Stockpiles
According to Главком: Ukraine's fuel reserves are substantially lower than those held by European nations. While European countries maintain roughly a 90-day supply, Ukrainian petrol stations only have enough fuel in reserve to last a few weeks. This disparity highlights a key vulnerability in the nation's energy security. However, there is no immediate physical shortage, as the majority of required volumes are already under contract and in transit to the country.
On average, Ukrainian filling stations store fuel for about two weeks, with gasoline supplies limited to approximately one week. In contrast, the 90-day reserves common in Europe provide a critical buffer against potential supply disruptions.
Serhiy Kuyun: 'Experts have no doubt that fuel will be available. It is already contracted. It is physically on its way to Ukraine. The volumes are sufficient. The problem now is not the availability of the resource, but the price and the uncertainty.'
Fuel Prices and the Risk of Panic
Fuel prices in Ukraine continue to climb, a trend mirrored in global markets. Serhiy Kuyun notes that 'The price will indeed change. And it is already changing not only here; it is changing everywhere, in the world, in the United States, in Europe.' The expert also warns against the danger of public panic, which could echo the fuel supply crisis the country faced in 2022.
Given the current situation, it is important to note that 'every storage tank is a target. No one wants to or will store fuel today because it is dangerous,' Kuyun emphasizes. Despite fuel being available, Ukrainian consumers are advised to remain cautious and avoid panic-buying, which can exacerbate shortages and price spikes.
The current fuel reserve situation in Ukraine underscores the critical need for stable supply chains and pricing policies. While physical availability is not the immediate issue, rising prices can significantly impact consumer demand and the broader economy. Amidst global energy price volatility, it is vital for Ukrainian consumers to remain calm, as panic can lead to further market instability and price increases.
