2026 Brings Fifth Blackout to Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant: Power Lost Again
Power Outage at Europe's Largest Nuclear Facility
According to Главком: In the early hours of June 3, 2026, the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant experienced a complete loss of external electricity-marking the fifth such blackout this year and the 17th since Russian forces seized the facility. At 11:44 PM, the Ferrosplavna-1 transmission line went down, cutting off all outside power to the station. Critical safety systems were kept running through backup diesel generators.
The outage was triggered by a drone strike on the Nikopolska substation, located on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River from the plant. This incident once again highlights the dangers stemming from the illegal occupation of the site.
'Another blackout at Europe's largest nuclear power plant underscores the severe risks posed by the illegal Russian occupation. Every loss of external power directly threatens nuclear and radiation safety,' stated Energoatom.
Global Reaction and Fallout
In late April 2026, a drone attack near the Zaporizhzhia plant killed one of its workers. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is currently negotiating with Ukraine and Russia to establish a localized ceasefire to allow for repairs.
'Energoatom insists: only returning the Zaporizhzhia plant to full Ukrainian control and its legitimate operator can guarantee safe operations and prevent a nuclear or radiation disaster with unpredictable consequences,' the agency emphasized.
This event underscores the ongoing threats posed by military activity around nuclear sites. Losing power at Zaporizhzhia not only jeopardizes the plant's safety but also raises international alarm. The IAEA continues seeking solutions to stabilize the situation, but Ukraine's lack of control over the facility severely complicates efforts to ensure its secure operation.
The recent power loss at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is not an isolated incident. Earlier, drone strikes had already disrupted the facility's main power supply, raising significant concerns about its operational safety.
