Ukrainian detained over Nord Stream announces hunger strike in Italian prison

Ukrainian on hunger strike suspected of sabotage
Українець, затриманий через справу Nord Stream, вирішив розпочати голодовку у в'язниці Італії.

According to the human rights defender, Kuznetsov has been refusing food since October 31 and is demanding respect for his fundamental rights, including the right to proper nutrition, a healthy environment, decent detention conditions, and equal treatment with other prisoners regarding family visits and access to information. As noted by the lawyer, since the beginning of the Ukrainian's arrest in Italy on August 22, 2025, he has not been provided with a diet according to his health condition, which led to a deterioration in his physical condition.

Ukrainian Sergey Kuznetsov, who was detained in Italy on suspicion of blowing up the 'Nord Streams', has announced a hunger strike. The man is in a high-security prison. This was reported by 'Glavcom' citing the lawyer Nicola Canestrini, quoted by 'Babel'.
It should be recalled that the Italian court on Monday, October 27, finally approved the extradition of the Ukrainian suspect to Germany. He is accused of participating in the sabotage of the 'Nord Stream' pipelines in the Baltic Sea in September 2022. This decision opens the way for German prosecutors to directly interrogate the suspect in connection with the explosions that destroyed three out of four strands of the pipelines.

Kuznetsov was arrested in August 2025 near the Italian city of Rimini, where he was vacationing with his family. Since the moment of the Ukrainian's arrest, he has been held in a high-security prison in northern Italy. The German federal prosecutor accuses him of jointly committing explosive-related sabotage and unconstitutional sabotage.

The Ukrainian, suspected of blowing up the 'Nord Streams' and detained in Italy, announced a hunger strike as a demand for the protection of his rights and the improvement of his detention conditions. German prosecutors are preparing for a direct interrogation of the suspect, awaiting his extradition.
