Statement from Ukraine's President

According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Kyiv has not received any official notification from Berlin regarding charges against a Ukrainian citizen for the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines. Speaking at a press conference in Dublin, Zelenskyy noted that the full details of the proceedings remain unclear. He added:

“We are not yet aware of all the specifics of this process. We have not officially received all the details-at least, I have not seen them. The relevant authorities of our two countries will connect, I believe, and once we have more information, we will likely be able to respond. It is too early to comment at this point.”

Official Charges Filed

On July 1, 2026, Germany’s federal prosecutor formally charged an alleged perpetrator in the bombing of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines for the first time. According to German media outlet Tagesschau, the accused is Ukrainian national Serhiy Kuznetsov. It is worth recalling that on September 26, 2022, three of the four pipeline strings were detonated near the island of Bornholm, within the exclusive economic zones of Denmark and Sweden.

The Nord Stream pipelines were built to transport Russian natural gas to Germany. Germany’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office has identified Serhiy Kuznetsov as a suspect in the pipeline sabotage. In early 2026, a court ordered his continued detention. Ukraine, for its part, has officially denied any involvement by its state agencies in the operation.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov alleged that the United States intends to restore the damaged pipelines and acquire them at a minimal cost. As a result, the situation surrounding the Nord Stream pipelines remains tense and continues to draw significant international attention.

President Zelenskyy’s remarks highlight the absence of formal communication from the German side, which may point to the complexity of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Germany regarding this case. At the same time, the charges could have serious implications for international politics, particularly for Europe’s energy security, given that the Nord Stream pipelines play a critical role in the supply of Russian gas to Western Europe.
