Ending Temporary Protection in the EU: What Awaits 4.3 Million Ukrainians
Ukraine, together with its European partners, is developing a plan for the gradual termination of the temporary protection program for Ukrainians. This initiative is being implemented under the EU Directive on Temporary Protection, as reported by 'Judicial and Legal Gazette'.
Ilona Havronska, Deputy Minister of Social Policy, Family and Integration of Ukraine with European Integration, emphasized that after the program ends, Ukrainians will have the choice to either remain in Europe with a different type of residency permit or return to their homeland.
She stressed: 'Now is the time to think about the future - how to transition from temporary protection to sustainable policies built on partnership.'
- The foundation of cooperation is based on the principles of unity, dignity, and partnership;
- Ukraine is actively collaborating with European colleagues to plan the next steps.
Partnership relations have also been recognized as important for further cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union, particularly in the context of the status of over 4 million Ukrainians benefiting from temporary protection in EU countries.
By utilizing the temporary protection status, Ukrainians in the European Union are given the opportunity to choose their future residence - to obtain another type of permit or return to their homeland. Ukraine, together with the EU, is working on a plan aimed at the step-by-step termination of the temporary protection program and transitioning to sustainable policies in the future.
