Ukraine’s president hails Armenian party’s electoral victory

According to Главком: Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, has extended his congratulations to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan after his party secured a win in the parliamentary elections. The message was posted on social media platform X. Pashinyan declared victory for the ‘Civil Contract’ party in the June 7 vote. Zelensky described the outcome as a clear reflection of Armenia’s sovereignty and its people’s right to determine their own path, stating:

“I congratulate Armenia on holding democratic, free elections and Nikol Pashinyan on his victory.”

Readiness for cooperation and EU support

In his address, Zelensky also signaled Ukraine’s willingness to deepen cooperation with Armenia. He called on the European Union to actively back Armenia, stressing that it is essential for citizens to see tangible improvements in their lives through ties with Europe:

“This is a test for the European Union. It is important not to waste time or opportunities.”

Armenia’s elections were widely seen as a referendum on the country’s geopolitical direction, particularly its potential alignment with the EU. In 2025, Armenia passed a law on European integration. At the same time, the country is under pressure from Russia, which has blocked imports of Armenian goods, including alcohol, agricultural products, fish, and flowers. These moves by Moscow have raised concerns that Armenia could face a ‘Ukrainian scenario’-a point previously raised by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Notably, Zelensky and Pashinyan met on May 4 in Yerevan. It was the first visit by a Ukrainian president to Armenia in 24 years.

Pashinyan’s electoral victory marks a significant step for Armenia as it pursues closer ties with Europe, potentially reshaping its relationships with both Russia and the West. Ukraine’s efforts to support Armenia during this period reflect Kyiv’s broader goal of strengthening regional partnerships and countering external pressure, particularly from Moscow. As events unfold, Armenia’s trajectory could serve as a key test for regional stability and for the EU’s commitment to backing democratic processes.

The geopolitical landscape in Armenia is becoming increasingly complex, especially in light of external pressures. As fears of a potential 'Ukrainian scenario' loom, Putin's recent outreach to Pashinyan highlights the delicate balance Armenia must maintain between its aspirations for European integration and its historical ties with Russia.
