Full EU Membership Demanded by Zelenskyy as Merz’s Compromise Is Rejected
Ukraine’s Diplomatic Push for EU Accession
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced an intensified diplomatic campaign to secure the country’s entry into the European Union. He firmly rejects German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s proposal for an 'associate member' status, insisting instead on full membership. Zelenskyy also expects the first negotiation cluster to be opened on May 26, a critical milestone in Ukraine’s EU integration process. This stance underscores Ukraine’s determination to achieve equal standing within the bloc rather than settle for a lesser arrangement.
Zelenskyy sent an official letter to top EU leadership, voicing his opposition to Merz’s initiative. Ukraine’s government labeled Merz’s approach a 'half-measure' and dismissed any ideas of 'limited' or 'partial' EU membership.
The president stated: 'Ukraine is fighting for its life, for its independence, and for that Europe which has longest lived in peace, protects people and life, safeguards culture, and precisely through such protection holds a truly global role.'
Significance of Opening Clusters in Negotiations
Additionally, Zelenskyy reported a strike on a Russian military enterprise located 1,700 kilometers from Ukraine’s state border, in the Perm region. The targeted facility supports other enterprises within Russia’s military-industrial complex.
The president noted: 'I thank the Security Service of Ukraine. Today we had a good long-range sanction against Russia: a distance of 1,700 kilometers from our state border of Ukraine and a precise strike – the Perm region.'
Zelenskyy also emphasized the importance of opening clusters in EU negotiations, stating: 'It is important to open clusters. It is important to move forward meaningfully in talks. It is important to work 100% for security and for our people. Thank you to all who are with us, who are with Ukraine!' European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius also raised the possibility of establishing a new defense union for Ukraine.
This news highlights Ukraine’s unwavering resolve regarding EU integration, a vital step amid current geopolitical challenges. By rejecting 'associate member' status, Ukraine signals its ambition for full membership, which could significantly impact its economic and political development. Meanwhile, the strike on a Russian enterprise demonstrates active Ukrainian military operations against the aggressor, potentially strengthening Ukraine’s position on the international stage.
As Ukraine pushes for full EU membership, the rejection of Merz's proposal highlights the ongoing debate over the country's future within the bloc. For a deeper understanding of Zelenskyy's stance against a status that lacks voting rights, you can read more about it here.
