Ukraine Targets 'Shadow Fleet' Captains and Russian Military Suppliers with Sanctions
Ukraine Imposes New Sanctions on Russia
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed decrees enacting two new sanctions packages. The first targets captains of 'shadow fleet' tankers, while the second covers individuals and companies supporting Russia's military-industrial complex. These measures aim to increase pressure on Russia, which finances its war effort and circumvents international restrictions. This action is part of Ukraine's broader strategy to disrupt the financial and logistical networks sustaining the Russian invasion.
Sanctions Details
Sanctions have been imposed on over two hundred ship captains who operate 'shadow fleet' tankers in the Black, Red, and Baltic Seas. Specifically, sanctions target 225 captains, the majority of whom-188-are already under sanctions from the EU, US, UK, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The first package aims to dismantle the logistical chains for Russian oil exports.
The second sanctions package covers 46 Russian citizens, two Iranian citizens, and 44 Russian companies that service Russia's military-industrial complex. The two Iranian citizens are involved in supplying aviation parts and components in circumvention of sanctions for the benefit of the Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industrial Corporation. This corporation is a partner of Russia in the development and production of 'Shahed' drones and is already under sanctions from Ukraine, the US, Switzerland, and New Zealand.
In connection with the new sanctions, Ukraine plans to share relevant information with its partners to synchronize sanctions regimes. According to the latest report from the International Maritime Organization, over five hundred vessels using forged or illegal flags have been recorded in the world's oceans. The organization's secretariat has counted 529 vessels sailing under false flags.
'We continue to persuade our partners of the importance of individual sanctions against tanker captains. Systematic work on a sanctioned tanker is sufficient grounds for consequences. We must deter the desire to work with Russian oil, as this is direct financing of the war,' stated Vladyslav Vlasuk.
The imposition of new sanctions against tanker captains and individuals supporting Russia's military-industrial complex is part of Ukraine's strategy in combating Russian aggression and attempts to strengthen international pressure on the Kremlin. These sanctions not only help reduce Russia's economic capabilities but also underscore the importance of global cooperation to ensure security and stability in the region.
