Osip Maksymovych Bodiansky: life and activity

On November 12, 2021, we celebrate the 213th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Ukrainian philologist-slavist, folklorist, ethnographer, and historian Osip Maksymovych Bodiansky. He also worked as a writer, translator, journalist, publisher, and public figure. He was born on November 12, 1808, in the town of Varva, which now belongs to the Pryluky district of Chernihiv region, and died on September 18, 1877, in Moscow.

Osip Maksymovych Bodiansky was a corresponding member of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences since 1854. He made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian culture and science. For example, he introduced the Peresopnytsia Gospel into scientific circulation, which he found in 1837 in the library of the Pereiaslav Theological Seminary.
