Trump’s Son-in-Law’s Resort Project Sparks Massive Protests in Albania
Albania Erupts Over Luxury Resort Backed by Kushner’s Firm
According to Главком: Thousands of demonstrators have flooded the main boulevard of Albania’s capital, Tirana, blocking the road near Prime Minister Edi Rama’s office. The protests, now in their third week, were triggered by the start of preparatory work and the installation of fencing at the construction site of a luxury resort. The project is financed by Affinity Partners, an investment company owned by Jared Kushner-son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Critics say the government’s support for the development bypasses environmental safeguards and public oversight.
What Protesters Demand
Protesters are calling for:
- the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama;
- the complete cancellation of the resort project, which covers the island of Sazan and the protected area of Pishë Poro-Nartë.
Chanting “Albania is not for sale,” the crowd has rejected the government’s stance. Rama has flatly refused to step down, declaring that he will
“never hand over the reins of power to noise.”
He also warned that changing course could jeopardize Albania’s strategic goal of joining the European Union. Rama suggested that public anger is primarily driven by Kushner’s personal ties to Trump.
The European Union has voiced serious concerns over potential environmental damage and the passage of strategic investment laws designed to fast-track development in protected zones and enable opaque contracts. Brussels warned this could block progress on the environmental chapter of EU accession talks. A technical road has already been laid across the dunes for construction, even though the Albanian government officially denies that work has begun. The European Commission noted that Albania’s environment minister has pledged to halt activities.
Clashes with police have erupted during the Tirana protests, which have intensified due to public anxiety over coastal development and non-transparent investment approval processes. Albanians are increasingly alarmed by encroachment on protected lands, and their demands on the government continue to escalate.
These protests reflect deep public concern over environmental protection and government transparency. Given the importance of environmental issues for Albania’s EU integration, the unrest could have serious consequences for its relationship with Brussels. The demonstrators’ strong stance signals a growing societal awareness about preserving natural resources and the need for responsible investment practices.
As protests continue to escalate in Tirana, the situation in Albania has drawn comparisons to other significant demonstrations against luxury developments. For instance, the recent mass protests over a €1.4 billion resort have highlighted the growing public discontent regarding government decisions that seemingly prioritize profit over environmental protection. This parallel underscores the increasing urgency of the protesters' demands and the potential implications for Albania's future development strategy.
