BMW Recalls 575,000 Vehicles Globally Over Starter Relay Defect Posing Fire Hazard
BMW Initiates Global Service Campaign
According to Главком: German automaker BMW has announced a major service campaign impacting approximately 575,000 vehicles worldwide. The action is due to a faulty starter relay that can overheat and potentially catch fire. This defect can cause difficult or impossible engine starts and poses a risk of a short circuit, leading to localized overheating of the starter component. Such large-scale recalls are not uncommon in the auto industry, but they highlight the critical importance of electrical system integrity.
Affected Models and Production Dates
The recall covers vehicles manufactured between July 2020 and July 2022. The following BMW models are included:
- 2 Series Coupe
- 3 Series
- 4 Series
- 5 Series
- 7 Series
- X4, X5, and X6 crossovers
- Z4 roadsters and the 6 Series GT
Additionally, Toyota GR Supra models, which share certain components with BMW, are also part of this recall.
Company representatives stated that in a worst-case scenario, the defect could lead to a vehicle fire while the car is in operation. Drivers may notice or smell smoke either while driving or after exiting the vehicle. It is worth noting that last autumn, BMW already recalled hundreds of thousands of cars for a separate starter issue related to potential water ingress.
This service campaign represents a significant step by BMW to ensure vehicle safety and protect consumers. Given the company's recent history with starter-related problems, it is crucial that effective measures are taken to resolve this issue and prevent future incidents. Owners of the affected models are strongly advised to check for the defect and contact authorized service centers for the necessary repairs.
