How Ukrainians and Russians Differ, per a Legion Fighter

According to ХВИЛЯ: In an interview with political scientist Yuriy Romanenko, Maksymilian Andronnikov-a fighter with the Freedom of Russia Legion who goes by the call sign Caesar-shared his perspective on what sets Ukrainians apart from Russians. He highlighted several key distinctions: mindset, creativity, a strong drive for freedom, a lack of reverence for authority, and the presence of tight-knit horizontal social bonds.

Andronnikov also addressed the perceived mental closeness between residents of Donbas and Russians, attributing it to historical factors, particularly the aftermath of the Holodomor. He explained that after this tragedy, the Donbas region was heavily resettled with Soviet-aligned populations, which fostered paternalistic attitudes among locals.

Defense Organization During the Invasion

Reflecting on Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Andronnikov emphasized how ordinary citizens spontaneously took up arms, using their passports to register, and organized defenses.

“Individual units, without any communication between each other, didn't wait for orders from above like the Russian army does... They coordinated, engaged in battle, and destroyed the enemy. That is what stopped them,”

he said. This demonstrated Ukrainians' ability to mobilize quickly and effectively under threat.
