Mass Brawl Erupts at European Sumo Championships in Scotland

Mass brawl after the end of the European Sumo Championship
Спортивні змагання перетворились на хаос на Європейському чемпіонаті з сумо в Шотландії.

Violence Overshadows Sumo and Boxing Events

According to Главком: A European Sumo Championships event held in Scotland descended into chaos after a brawl broke out, triggered by a confrontation between an organizer named Scott and a Hungarian team member. Scott accused the Hungarian athlete of striking his wife, which sparked the conflict and led to a large-scale fight.

“The European Sumo Championships ended in a mass brawl. Whether it’s true or not is hard to say. But one thing is certain: the organization of the championship was, to put it mildly, not up to the standard of a tournament of this scale. Sport should be remembered for victories, not scandals,” said Ruslan Shchedrin, Vice President of the Sumo Federation of Ukraine.

During the same event, Olympic champion Zhan Beleniuk voiced his frustration, comparing the sports venue to a 'mediocre Ukrainian school gym.' His remarks highlighted the poor organizational quality and inadequate infrastructure of the championship.

Further Clashes at Other Competitions

In addition to the sumo incident, a mass brawl also broke out in Trabzon, Turkey, following a boxing match. Russian boxer Sergei Gorokhov, who was competing for the Universal Boxing Organization (UBO) world title against Turkey’s Emirkhan Kalkan, became the focal point of the escalation when spectators rushed the ring. The tournament was interrupted due to the fight, and no official winner was declared.

Both events thus turned into not just sporting competitions but also sources of conflict, drawing attention to serious issues in event organization and security.

These incidents underscore the critical need for proper management of sporting events, as they can significantly impact the reputation of the sport and its popularity among fans. As such situations become increasingly common, it is essential for tournament organizers to take steps to improve safety and event control. This may include:

  • Upgrading infrastructure
  • Enhancing staff training
  • Ensuring proper crowd control at competitions

The recent upheavals in sporting events are not isolated incidents, as demonstrated by another controversy involving international teams.
