Tomato Prices Surge 38% in Ukraine as Consumers Await Domestic Harvest
Sharp Increase in Imported Greenhouse Tomato Prices
According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine is experiencing a significant rise in the cost of imported greenhouse tomatoes, driven by a heavy reliance on shipments from Turkey and a current lack of domestic supply. According to data from EastFruit, wholesale prices for imported tomatoes have climbed by an average of 10% over the past week. The current wholesale price range is 120-140 UAH/kg. As a result, prices for greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine are now, on average, 38% higher than they were during the same period last year. This price shock highlights the market's vulnerability during the off-season for local growers.
Retail prices have also risen substantially. At Auchan supermarkets, red tomatoes are selling for 209.00 UAH/kg, while the Metro chain lists them at 165.36 UAH/kg. At Novus, the average price is 129 UAH per kilogram. Ukrainian greenhouse producers are not expected to bring their own harvest to market until at least mid-March, which may offer some relief to the strained market.
Impact on Consumers and the Market
Consequently, consumers continue to face higher prices for tomatoes, a situation caused by external factors and seasonal shifts in market supply.
The surge in prices for imported greenhouse tomatoes underscores the vulnerability of Ukraine's food market to external shocks, particularly its dependence on Turkish imports. With domestic production not yet able to fully meet consumer demand, this price increase could affect the overall inflation rate and the purchasing power of households. The anticipated arrival of domestic tomatoes in mid-March offers some hope for price stabilization later in the spring, but for now, consumers are bearing the cost of this popular staple.
