Why Do Mosquitoes Prefer Certain People Over Others?

According to НВ — Техно: Scientific studies have uncovered why mosquitoes target certain individuals more frequently. Carbon dioxide, body odor, skin temperature, and skin moisture play critical roles in attracting these insects. However, factors like blood type, skin color, eye color, or hair color have no impact on bite likelihood. Interestingly, drinking beer can increase the risk of being bitten. Climate change is also expanding the habitats of these insects into new regions.

Female mosquitoes that bite humans can detect carbon dioxide from dozens of meters away. Once a mosquito gets within about 10 meters, it begins to sense a person's body odor. Humans emit between 300 and 1,000 different aromatic compounds. In a recent study, researchers observed the behavior of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which can transmit yellow fever and dengue fever. In the lab, the insects were released among 42 women.

The scientists identified 27 compounds that mosquitoes can recognize out of roughly 1,000 possibilities. Women who were bitten most often, including those in their second trimester of pregnancy, produced higher levels of a substance called 1-octen-3-ol. Swedish researcher Rickard Ignell noted:

'It is the CO₂ exhaled by a person that serves as the first signal triggering the search behavior in mosquitoes.' Rickard Ignell

A study in Burkina Faso found that volunteers who first drank beer and then, a few days later, water became more attractive to Anopheles mosquitoes-which can carry malaria-after consuming beer. In the Netherlands, a 2023 study involving 465 people revealed that volunteers who had drunk beer within the previous 24 hours were 1.35 times more attractive to mosquitoes.

Tips to Reduce the Risk of Mosquito Bites

Additionally, last year saw the first recorded cases of chikungunya in northern France, in the Alsace region. Medical entomologist Frédéric Simard from the French Institute for Development Research emphasized: 'The claim that mosquitoes are attracted to certain people is not a myth.'

Experts recommend the following measures to lower bite risk:

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing that covers the skin.
  • Use mosquito nets and repellents.
  • Avoid overeating and limit alcohol consumption.

These research findings highlight the importance of understanding what makes people attractive to mosquitoes, especially as global climate change may expand the ranges of these insects. The discovery that beer consumption is a risk factor is particularly relevant during summer vacations and outdoor events, calling for caution. Following expert prevention tips can help individuals reduce the risks associated with mosquito-borne diseases.

As we explore the factors influencing mosquito attraction, it's important to note that repellents are not always effective. Recent findings indicate that mosquitoes are adapting to commonly used repellents, potentially diminishing their effectiveness. Understanding these developments can help us better protect ourselves against these persistent pests.
