Changes to Montenegro's Visa Policy

According to УНІАН — Туризм: As part of its push to align with European Union regulations, Montenegro intends to introduce visas for citizens of Russia and Belarus beginning October 1. The government in Podgorica aims to bring its visa framework in line with EU standards by the end of 2027, reflecting the country's broader ambition to integrate into the European community. This move is a key step in that direction.

Beyond Russia and Belarus, the new visa regime may also apply to nationals of several other countries, including:

  • Turkey
  • China
  • The United Arab Emirates
  • Qatar
  • Bahrain
  • Other nations

This potential expansion of visa policy could significantly impact tourist flows into the country, as many of these nations are key sources of visitors.

Adopting Schengen Standards and Their Implications

Montenegro also plans to start implementing Schengen-area standards, which include collecting biometric data from visa applicants. To handle the application process, authorities are looking to partner with the international operator VFS Global, a move that could streamline paperwork for foreigners seeking entry.

In a separate but related note, it is worth highlighting that 96% of EU bathing waters meet minimum quality standards, with 85% of over 22,000 sites earning the top 'excellent' rating. Cyprus leads the ranking with 100% excellent swimming zones, while Albania lags far behind at just 16.8%. These figures offer useful context for tourists considering travel in the region.

Ultimately, these visa policy shifts could have far-reaching effects on Montenegro-especially its tourism sector and diplomatic relations with other states. By harmonizing with EU law and pursuing deeper European integration, Montenegro hopes to strengthen its international standing and attract greater investment in tourism and the broader economy.

As Montenegro adjusts its visa requirements, travelers to Europe may face longer wait times at borders, similar to the recent 5-hour delays at European airports due to the new Entry/Exit System. These changes highlight the increasing complexity of international travel in the region and underscore the importance of staying informed about evolving policies that could impact your journey.
