DBR completed the case against the former deputy commander of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation: he faces life imprisonment
According to hvylya.net: The State Bureau of Investigations has completed the pre-trial investigation regarding the former deputy commander of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation and four former employees of the Sevastopol unit 'Berkut'. According to the DBR report, the suspects are charged with organizing cruel treatment of prisoners of war and civilians, state treason, possession of firearms, and actions aimed at changing the state border of Ukraine that led to serious consequences.
'In February-March 2014, the suspects, under the leadership of the deputy commander of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation, actively assisted the occupying authorities of the Russian Federation in Crimea: they organized checkpoints, blocked roads from mainland Ukraine to the peninsula, prevented the entry of international observers, journalists, and representatives of Ukrainian law enforcement agencies. They detained Ukrainian soldiers, Maidan activists, and volunteers, subjecting them to physical and psychological violence - beating them, threatening them with execution, shooting near their heads, inflicting bodily harm with cold weapons. The detained were held captive at the so-called 'guardhouse' in Sevastopol'
Currently, 13 victims of the actions of the suspects have been identified, but work on identifying other victims and establishing all involved continues.
The defendants are accused under part 2 of article 262 (being armed), part 1 of article 111 (state treason), part 3 of article 110 (actions aimed at changing the borders of Ukraine), part 1 of article 438 (cruel treatment of prisoners of war) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, with the prescribed sanctions up to life imprisonment.
The pre-trial investigation of the State Bureau of Investigations in the case of the former deputy commander of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation and former employees of 'Berkut' revealed the involvement of the suspects in serious violations, particularly in the field of human rights and international law. The work on identifying the victims continues, and the defendants face life imprisonment for the crimes committed.
