The Debate Over Ukraine's Declining Birth Rate

According to ХВИЛЯ: Political scientist Yuriy Romanenko and economist Maksym Piven have presented opposing views on the causes of Ukraine's falling birth rate. Currently, approximately 180,000 children are born in the country each year. Romanenko links the demographic crisis to economic factors and education, while Piven is convinced it results from a targeted information campaign.

Maksym Piven asserts that Ukrainians have been persuaded of the need to reduce births because, in his view,

"the population must be reduced, as the earth cannot feed so many people."

The economist believes such views are shaped by informational campaigns. In response, Yuriy Romanenko noted that many people choose not to have children not due to propaganda, but because of personal choices related to career ambitions. He emphasized that

"children are a pain and a major expense,"

especially in modern life where significant financial resources are required to obtain a quality education.

Romanenko also asked:

"Where have you seen elements of anti-natalist propaganda in Ukraine?"

He stressed that 180,000 children are currently born in the country and does not believe in the existence of deep-seated propaganda from mass culture. The political scientist cited the film 'The Devil Wears Prada' as an example, noting that his wife gave birth to two children after watching it, suggesting cultural products can have varied impacts on individuals.

Furthermore, Romanenko highlights the importance of education for women. In his opinion, an educated woman is "the primary agent interested in giving birth when she herself desires, and not just for the sake of it." Thus, he believes the decline in births is a consequence of economic and social factors, not the result of conspiracies or propaganda. This debate occurs against the backdrop of a nation grappling with profound demographic shifts common to post-Soviet states.

Socio-Economic Challenges in Ukraine

The exchange between experts underscores the complexity of the birth rate issue in Ukraine, which demands a deeper understanding of the causes and consequences of demographic change in society.

This discussion reflects significant socio-economic challenges facing Ukraine, particularly under conditions of war and economic instability. The problem of a declining birth rate is part of a broader context of demographic changes that could impact the country's economic development, labor market stability, and social structures. Understanding these factors may help in formulating effective state policies aimed at supporting families and increasing the birth rate in Ukraine.
