Overnight Drone Strike Hits Chemical Plant Supplying Russia’s Defense Industry in Stavropol Region

Nighttime drone attack on chemical plant
Нічна атака безпілотника вразила хімічний завод, що постачає продукцію для оборонної промисловості Росії в Ставропольському краї.

Explosions Rock Stavropol Region

According to Главком: A series of explosions shook Russia’s Stavropol region during the night of May 20. Drones targeted the city of Nevinnomyssk, striking the Nevinnomyssk Azot plant. The attack sparked a fire at the facility. Mayor Mikhail Minenkov urged residents to leave the streets and take shelter, while also reporting that air defense systems were engaged and an aerial battle was underway.

The Strategic Role of Nevinnomyssk Azot

The Nevinnomyssk Azot plant is a major industrial facility that produces components used in the manufacture of explosives. It supplies chemical raw materials to Russia’s military-industrial complex and ranks among the country’s largest producers of ammonia and ammonium nitrate. The site features an extensive industrial infrastructure with large chemical storage tanks, and key logistics routes in southern Russia pass through the plant.

This is not the first time Nevinnomyssk Azot has come under attack. On the night of May 16, drones also struck the facility, and in June 2025, the plant was hit again. Governor of the Stavropol region Vladimir Vladimirov confirmed that debris fell in the industrial zone during the June 2025 incident and reported one casualty from those events. The ongoing situation around the plant raises serious questions about security and the risk of further strikes in the area.

These incidents highlight the growing tension in the region, where industrial sites are increasingly becoming targets. As a key supplier to the military-industrial complex, Nevinnomyssk Azot holds significant strategic importance, making its protection critically vital. With the persistent threat of drone attacks, safeguarding such enterprises is becoming an ever more pressing concern for local authorities and the state as a whole.

The recent drone strike on the Nevinnomyssk Azot plant highlights a troubling trend of increasing attacks on critical infrastructure in Russia. This situation mirrors previous incidents, raising concerns about the security of key facilities that support the nation's defense sector.
