Tragedy on Ukraine's Roads

According to Главком: Two members of Ukraine's State Emergency Service (SES) were killed in a road accident in Ternopil on February 22, 2026. The collision, which involved a Mercedes and a Renault Kangoo, occurred around 3:00 AM on Obizhna Street. The deceased rescuers were 35 and 47 years old. Ukraine's road safety record has been a persistent challenge, with infrastructure and enforcement issues contributing to high fatality rates.

The driver of the Mercedes was detained at the scene under Article 208 of Ukraine's Criminal Procedure Code. Investigations are underway to determine if the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A criminal case has been initiated for the fatal accident. If found guilty, the driver faces a prison sentence of 7 to 12 years and could be banned from driving for up to a decade.

Police Officer Viktoriia Shpylka Also Killed

In a separate incident on the same day, police officer Viktoriia Shpylka, 23, was tragically killed in an explosion on Danylyshyna Street. Originally from Volyn, she lived in Kherson and was a graduate of the Lviv State University of Internal Affairs. Her death marks another somber chapter for Ukraine's law enforcement community, which operates under constant threat.

These events highlight the perilous conditions on Ukrainian roads and the significant risks faced by emergency and law enforcement personnel. The deaths underscore the dangers inherent in their professions and the urgent need for enhanced safety measures.
