Beyond the Visible Galaxy

According to НВ — Техно: Recent astronomical research reveals that jets emitted by supermassive black holes have a profound effect on the gaseous environment surrounding galaxies. These powerful jets prevent the gas from cooling efficiently, thereby hindering the birth of new stars. Scientists analyzed data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) alongside radio observations from the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey (LoTSS) to study active black holes and their associated jets. Their findings revealed uneven ionized gas emission aligned with the jets, indicating significant heating and alteration of the circumgalactic medium (CGM).

Researchers, including Sanjaita Borthakur from Arizona State University and Namrata Roy from the Raman Research Institute, emphasize that the influence of black hole jets extends well beyond the galaxy's visible boundaries. The CGM stretches roughly 10 to 20 times farther than the galaxy’s luminous region. Observations detected faint H-alpha emission in all directions around the galaxies, but this emission was notably intensified along the jets’ trajectories.

Jets’ Impact on the Circumgalactic Medium

The study identified two bright emission zones: one near the galaxy where the jet first interacts with the CGM, and another at the outer edge of the CGM. These jets can heat, mix, and reshape the gas in the CGM, making it harder for the gas to cool down and flow back into the galaxy. Interestingly, colder gas traced by magnesium was found to be more broadly distributed and showed no clear alignment with the jets.

The reach of a supermassive black hole’s influence can span hundreds of thousands of light-years from the galaxy’s center. This demonstrates that jets play a crucial role in governing galaxy evolution and regulating star formation rates. These insights open new avenues for understanding how the CGM affects the future development of galaxies.

Understanding how black hole jets interact with their surroundings is vital to unraveling the complexities of galaxy growth and star formation. Given their ability to impact regions far beyond the galactic core, these jets are key players in shaping the large-scale structure of the universe. Ongoing research in this field promises to deepen our grasp of cosmic phenomena and the dynamic processes shaping galaxies.

Understanding the influence of supermassive black holes on their surroundings can shed light on broader cosmic phenomena. For instance, the role of wandering black holes in shaping the early universe illustrates how these massive entities can impact galaxy formation and evolution on a grand scale. Exploring these connections can enhance our comprehension of the universe's intricate dynamics.
