Statement from Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs

According to МЗС: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has responded to a proposal from the European Commission for the EU to join as a founding member of a Special Tribunal to investigate the crime of aggression against Ukraine. This initiative is designed to legally prosecute war crimes committed during the conflict in Ukraine. The establishment of such a tribunal represents a significant move toward international legal accountability.

Andrii Sybiha welcomed the proposal and expressed hope for its swift approval by the Council of the European Union.

'I hope for the rapid approval of this proposal by the Council and for EU member states to join the Tribunal,' the minister emphasized.

Key locations for the tribunal's investigations will include atrocities committed in cities such as:

  • Bucha
  • Mariupol
  • Izium

Implementing this proposal requires a formal decision from the EU Council.

Significance of the Initiative

The European Commission's proposal to create a Special Tribunal for investigating crimes of aggression against Ukraine marks a crucial step in the legal process, potentially ensuring accountability for those responsible for war crimes. Support from EU member states would strengthen international solidarity with Ukraine and demonstrate the European Union's commitment to upholding human rights and international law. Approval of this initiative is expected to have a substantial impact on the regional situation and Ukraine's efforts to achieve justice, sending a powerful message about the consequences of violating international norms.

As discussions around the Special Tribunal progress, the focus shifts to the individuals who may be held accountable for their actions during the conflict. Understanding the implications of this legal framework is crucial, as it raises questions about who might ultimately face justice and the broader impact on international law and human rights in the region.
