Euroclear may sue the EU over Russian assets: what this means for Ukraine
According to hvylya.net: The international depository Euroclear in Belgium is preparing for a lawsuit regarding Russian assets that have been frozen. The European Union is considering the possibility of a reparations loan for Ukraine based on these assets, but the process is complicated by legal and judicial aspects raised by some EU countries.
Euroclear's CEO, Valerie Urban, emphasized that the company does not rule out the possibility of filing a lawsuit. In 2022, Euroclear strengthened its legal department, which may be a preparation for future legal proceedings.
The frozen Russian assets in the depository amount to €193 billion, but any steps similar to confiscation are illegal and violate international law regarding a state's sovereign assets. Ukraine plans to obtain a reparations loan of €130-140 billion backed by the frozen assets, but the repayment conditions are still being discussed.
