Backlash Over Ukrainian President’s Move

According to Главком: The European Parliament has adopted a resolution criticizing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to name an elite military unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine after heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The amendment to the resolution was drafted by the European People’s Party, led by Donald Tusk, and was introduced by lawmakers Andżelika Możdżanowska and Michael Gahler. The resolution passed with 460 votes in favor, 136 against, and 59 abstentions.

The resolution expresses regret over the disregard for Polish sensitivities and historical grievances, arguing that the decision undermines neighborly relations. It also emphasizes the need for de-escalation and renewed good-faith efforts toward reconciliation. The report is noted as non-binding for the parliament.

Presidential Talks Between Poland and Ukraine

Polish President Andrzej Duda met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, where the two discussed ongoing bilateral disputes. The talks lasted over an hour, but according to Duda, they failed to resolve historical issues. He added that Warsaw and Kyiv must maintain dialogue and cooperation despite existing disagreements, as both countries share a common adversary-the Russian Federation.

Within the Polish government, there is a growing belief that the intention to create a Ukrainian National Pantheon is escalating the conflict. As a result, tensions surrounding the renaming of the military unit and broader historical issues remain high against the backdrop of evolving Poland-Ukraine relations.

It is important to note that this European Parliament resolution reflects increasing friction between Ukraine and Poland, two nations with intertwined histories but also ongoing political challenges. Despite their disputes, dialogues between the countries indicate efforts to preserve cooperation in the face of the Russian threat. The situation could become a defining factor for future bilateral relations, as both sides seek paths to reconciliation and regional stability.
