FIFA President Signals Potential Review of Russia's Football Ban

According to Главком: FIFA President Gianni Infantino has indicated a willingness to reconsider the suspension of Russian teams from international competitions. This potential policy shift has been met with a firm and immediate response from Ukraine. Andriy Shevchenko, President of the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF), has reiterated the country's unwavering stance: as long as the war continues, Ukraine is categorically opposed to any return of Russian teams to world football. For now, the FIFA Council is not formally reviewing the issue of reinstatement.

Russian national and club teams have been banned from FIFA and UEFA tournaments since February 2022, following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This suspension has resulted in Russia missing several major tournaments, including:

  • The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar;
  • UEFA Euro 2024;
  • Multiple editions of the UEFA Nations League.

Based on the current sanctions, Russia will also be unable to participate in the 2026 World Cup.

Shevchenko's Uncompromising Stance

Andriy Shevchenko emphasized the critical importance of continued international solidarity, stating:

“The UAF reacted immediately. We clearly stated our position, which remains unchanged: while the war continues, we are categorically against the return of Russians to football.” - Andriy Shevchenko

Shevchenko also plans to meet with Gianni Infantino to personally convey the realities of the war in Ukraine and the UAF's position. 'Colleagues from various associations support us. As long as this support remains, the return of Russians to competitions is not being considered,' he added. The global football community remains largely aligned with Ukraine's position, viewing the ban as a necessary consequence of Russia's aggression.

Infantino's comments, suggesting that 'we certainly have to look at it. The suspension of Russia achieved nothing, only creating more disappointment and hatred,' stand in stark contrast to Shevchenko's firm position. The UAF maintains that sport cannot be separated from the ongoing conflict on Ukrainian soil.

Ukraine's Team Focuses on the Pitch

Amidst this political debate, the Ukrainian national team continues its preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Ukraine is scheduled to play Sweden in a semi-final playoff match on March 26, 2025, for a chance to reach the 2026 tournament. A victory would see them face the winner of the Poland vs. Albania match in the playoff final. The team recently concluded the first group stage of European qualification, finishing with a morale-boosting 2-0 victory over Iceland in Warsaw, secured with two second-half goals.

The issue of Russia's potential reintegration into international football remains highly contentious, provoking strong reactions in Ukraine and globally. The UAF's stance, grounded in principles of solidarity during wartime, underscores the ethical dimensions of sport during conflict. Meanwhile, Infantino's remarks about a possible review risk sparking fresh controversy regarding the intersection of sports governance and geopolitics. FIFA's next steps and the wider football world's reaction will be closely watched, as they could significantly influence the future landscape of international football.
