Khmehnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant Connected to Grid Ahead of Schedule: Extra Power Supply for Ukraine
Unit at Khmehnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant Reconnected to Grid
According to Главком: On April 28, 2026, a power unit at the Khmehnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant (KhNPP) was reconnected to the national electricity grid after a scheduled preventive maintenance overhaul. The work wrapped up four days earlier than planned, enabling the generation of an additional 70 million kWh of electricity. This marks the first refurbished unit under Ukraine’s 2026 maintenance campaign.
Maintenance Campaign and Future Plans
The maintenance campaign at KhNPP began in April and will run through October. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal has emphasized the need for new nuclear units, as the goal is to operate all nine reactors located in territory controlled by Ukraine ahead of the autumn-winter period. Pavlo Kovtonyuk noted that the maintenance schedule has been arranged to avoid creating a significant shortfall in the power grid:

Work at KhNPP also includes upgrades to increase capacity, strengthen protection and safety systems, and build additional protective structures. Additionally, two options for completing the construction of KhNPP’s Units 3 and 4 are under consideration. A draft law has recently been submitted to the Verkhovna Rada regarding the integration of SkhidGZK into Energoatom.
The early completion of repairs at KhNPP represents a key step toward stabilizing Ukraine’s power supply, especially as the country prepares for the autumn-winter season. Ongoing maintenance and efforts to boost nuclear capacity highlight the government and energy companies’ push to reduce the risk of future electricity shortages. At the same time, legislative initiatives could help integrate resources and improve management across the energy sector.
As the Khmehnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant ramps up its output ahead of schedule, the urgency for enhanced energy capacity is further underscored by the government's recent mandate. With a deadline looming for the readiness of 6 GW of capacity before winter, the focus on ensuring a stable power supply has never been more critical.
