Pitchforks and Torches for the 21st Century

According to НВ — Техно: Recent months have seen a surge in threats and aggressive acts against the artificial intelligence sector, driven by public discontent. Tensions escalated sharply after several incidents involving leaders and companies in this field. According to data recorded between February and May, the number of threats directed at executives and data centers increased sevenfold.

In April of this year, a dramatic escalation occurred when Daniel Moreno-Game threw a Molotov cocktail at the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. During a search of the suspect, authorities found a manifesto calling for the killing of investors and top managers of AI companies. Just five days after the Altman incident, an unidentified individual entered the lobby of Anthropic’s headquarters and handed security an envelope warning of a planned murder of one of its executives.

Conflicts between companies and clients have also fueled rising aggression. In June, Anthropic contacted police after a client from Oklahoma threatened to show up at the office with a pistol. Additionally, a man who tried to apply for a job at Anthropic under a false name posted threats against employees’ children, causing significant concern within the company.

Financial Disputes and Threats to Children

Alongside these incidents, tensions are rising in San Francisco, where passersby shout insults at workers of the AI startup Corgi. This startup has also been targeted by vandalism: unknown individuals damaged its corporate bus, forcing the company to hire additional security.

One Anthropic client stated: 'Since you refuse to connect me with a real person and return my money, I will come to your office with my pistol, and then we will finally talk about my money.'

These words highlight the depth of frustration and aggression among those who feel cornered.

The Scale of the Threat Is Growing

According to data from the company Liferaft, threats against executives and data centers surged sevenfold between February and May. This underscores the serious danger facing AI companies.

Security as Part of Business

In response to rising aggression, company leaders have begun tightening security measures. Palantir increased its security spending by 150%, reaching $3 million, while Oracle and Salesforce also raised their security budgets to $5.6 million and $4 million, respectively. Anthropic, aware of the threat’s scope, has implemented around-the-clock security at its facilities.

Palantir CEO Alex Karp noted: 'People who are told their profession will soon disappear may shift from fear to open protest.' This underscores the importance of understanding the consequences that can arise from changes in the technological landscape and their impact on society at large.

The growing aggression and threats against AI companies highlight serious social and economic challenges facing modern tech firms. The observed trend toward escalating violence and vandalism may reflect deep societal discontent with the rapid changes brought by technological progress. The need to bolster security measures to protect employees calls into question the concept of innovation and its impact on the labor market, potentially creating new challenges for businesses overall.

As tensions escalate within the AI industry, recent protests have also drawn attention to the broader implications of public sentiment. In a related incident, demonstrators set up body bags outside the OpenAI office during a protest against the Pentagon, highlighting the growing discontent surrounding technology and its impact on society.
