Potato Prices in Ukraine Surge Following Period of Stability
Sharp Increase in Potato Costs
According to Главком: After a prolonged period of stability for staple vegetables, potato prices in Ukraine have risen sharply. Since the beginning of last week, wholesale prices have surged, leading retailers to increase their selling prices to a range of 7 to 13 UAH per kilogram. This represents an average increase of 16% compared to the end of the first ten days of January this year. Wholesale company representatives confirm that the price hike is due to a general reduction in the supply of potatoes on the domestic market, citing a shortage of sufficient volumes of quality potatoes from local farms.
Retail Prices Across Supermarket Chains
Despite the recent jump, current retail potato prices in Ukraine remain, on average, 60-65% lower than during the same period last year. Prices vary significantly between different supermarket chains. For example:
- At Varus, potato prices range from 12.90 UAH per kg for loose potatoes to 26.90 UAH per kg for Granada and Bellarossa varieties.
- In Silpo, select white potatoes cost 25.69 UAH per kg, while the Bellarossa variety is 26.69 UAH per kg.
- At Ecomarket, loose white potatoes are available for 15.99 UAH per kg.
- ATB sells first-grade potatoes for 13.89 UAH per kg.
- In the Metro chain, potatoes packaged in 5 kg nets sell for 129 UAH per pack, equating to 25.80 UAH per kg.
These price fluctuations reflect broader market trends and are likely to impact household spending for consumers. As a core component of the Ukrainian diet, the cost of potatoes is a key indicator of food affordability.
The sudden increase may point to underlying challenges in the agricultural sector, potentially linked to climatic conditions or broader economic factors like inflation. Given that potatoes are a dietary staple, rising prices could strain household budgets, particularly amid ongoing economic uncertainty. Consumers are advised to compare prices across different retailers to find the best value, which may also encourage market competition. Monitoring supply and price trends in the coming weeks will be crucial.
