Ukrainian Man's Border Escape Foiled After Posing 80-Year-Old Mother-in-Law as His Wife
Kyiv Resident Detained for Attempting Illegal Exit from Ukraine
According to Главком: Border guards at the Mohyliv-Podilskyi detachment intercepted a 44-year-old man from Kyiv as he tried to leave Ukraine illegally. His plan involved presenting his 80-year-old mother-in-law as his spouse, using a fraudulent marriage certificate. Although the pair provided documents purporting to prove their marital status, inconsistencies in their answers during questioning immediately raised the guards' suspicions.
The elderly woman, who has a disability, is the mother of the man's common-law wife, who was already abroad at the time of the incident. The scheme to fabricate a marriage was initiated to secure a legal exemption for the man to leave the country under martial law restrictions. With his crossing denied, the case has been handed over to the National Police for a criminal investigation.
The Industry of Sham Marriages in Ukraine
Ukraine has seen a rise in an industry arranging sham marriages, often targeting men eligible for military service who seek to marry women with disabilities. Under Ukrainian law, men who are the sole caregivers for spouses with disabilities can obtain a deferment from mobilization. On social media, offers to arrange such marriages range from 8,000 to 20,000 Ukrainian hryvnias (approximately $200 to $500 USD).
In a related case, a court in the capital has been hearing a lawsuit for nearly a year to annul a marriage as fraudulent. The case involves the former wife of a soldier missing in action and a new wife who is a former employee of the civil registry office.
This incident underscores the ongoing issue of fraudulent marriages in Ukraine, a problem exacerbated by the war and mobilization efforts.
The increasing number of such cases points to the severe social and economic pressures facing citizens. Investigating these schemes is a crucial step in combating fraud and abuse in this area, which poses a significant challenge to the rule of law.
This incident highlights a troubling trend in Ukraine, where individuals resort to fraudulent schemes to evade military service. For instance, a recent case involved a Kyiv man who was arrested for orchestrating a fake document operation, charging $6,000 to help others escape their mobilization obligations. Such activities reflect the desperation among those seeking to avoid service amid ongoing conflict.
