Celebrating Life by Kyiv's Reservoir

According to Главком: German photographer Till Mayer has published a series of photographs from the Kyiv Reservoir, capturing how people celebrate life despite the difficult conditions prevailing in the capital. With emergency blackouts in effect, residents are seizing brief moments to enjoy nature. Currently, over 800 buildings in Kyiv remain without electricity, significantly complicating daily life. The reservoir, a large artificial lake north of the city, has long been a popular recreational area for Kyiv's residents.

As of January 25, there are 1,300 'Invincibility Points' operating in Kyiv, providing support to residents during power cuts. Till Mayer observes that while people on the reservoir's shore are celebrating life, they do not know what the next hour will bring.

"This moment matters-it's a brief holiday from the war. Priceless time on the weekend," says the photographer.

Hardship and Resilience

However, after each respite, people return to their icy apartments, which often lack heating and sometimes water. Electricity is available for only a few hours per day, making the winter unbearable due to Russian airstrikes on energy infrastructure.

"Before darkness falls, people are enjoying the winter-a season Putin is using as a weapon against humanity," Mayer adds.

Tragically, during repair work following the January 24 attack, rescue worker and high-altitude specialist Oleksandr Pytaichuk lost his life. This tragedy underscores the risks faced by emergency responders in the line of duty. Thus, life in Kyiv continues to blend moments of leisure with the hardships caused by war and the energy crisis.

The situation in Kyiv illustrates the resilience and endurance of its residents, who, despite severe conditions, strive to find joy in daily life. Their pursuit of brief moments of happiness against the backdrop of an energy crisis reflects a profound desire for normalcy. The support from the network of Invincibility Points provides a crucial lifeline, offering essential aid in these challenging times.
