Increase in the number of female officers in the Armed Forces of Ukraine

According to Главком: The number of female officers in the Armed Forces of Ukraine has increased from 4% at the beginning of 2023 to 21% today, indicating progress in gender equality in the army. However, despite this, there are still no female combat generals in Ukraine.

According to reports, since 2019, young female officers have appeared in the Armed Forces, some of whom already hold the rank of major or captain. This reflects a gradual increase in women in command positions, particularly among squad and company commanders. Nevertheless, despite the overall increase in the number of female officers, the situation regarding combat generals remains unchanged.

“There are no female combat generals in the Armed Forces of Ukraine because they have not yet undergone the necessary tactical, operational and strategic education, nor have they commanded brigades.”

Oksana Grygorieva

Grygorieva also emphasized that the statistics showing an increase in the number of female officers are positive. She noted that going from 4% two years ago to 21% today is significant progress for the Armed Forces. This indicates a gradual achievement of gender equality in the army, although much work remains ahead to ensure equal opportunities in all areas of military service.

Challenges on the path to gender equality

The growth in the number of women in officer ranks within the Armed Forces reflects broader trends in society, where the issue of gender equality is becoming increasingly relevant. However, the absence of female combat generals indicates that, despite positive changes, there are still significant barriers that need to be overcome to achieve true equality.

  • The necessity for reforms in military education and training.
  • Cultural changes in attitudes towards female military leadership.
