Avalanche Strikes Skiers in the Carpathians as Emergency Services Issue Level 3 Warning
Avalanche in the Carpathians
According to Главком: An avalanche descended on a group of skiers in the Carpathian Mountains, resulting in one person being injured. The incident occurred on the slope of the Chornohora Ridge where a group of vacationers was present. According to reports, one individual was completely buried, but their companions managed to dig them out. The other members of the group escaped serious consequences.
Warning from the State Emergency Service
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) has issued a level three avalanche danger warning for the Carpathian highlands from March 1 to 2. A period of warming is expected in the region during this time, which may increase the risk of avalanches. As Vitaliy Hlahola stated,
“It is currently known that one person was completely buried. But friends managed to dig him out in time. The others miraculously avoided serious consequences.”
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of winter mountain recreation. It is worth recalling that last year, on January 6, an avalanche of wind-driven snow with a volume of 1,280 cubic meters descended from the eastern slope of Mount Bretskul in the Carpathians. These events underscore the critical need for caution during winter excursions in the mountains, especially under heightened avalanche risk conditions.
The situation highlights the importance of vigilance during active mountain recreation, particularly in winter when avalanche danger increases. Under conditions of changing weather and rising temperatures, as noted by the SESU, risks for tourists and skiers rise significantly. It is essential for vacationers to heed rescue service recommendations and stay informed about potential hazards.
