Ursula von der Leyen's plane made an emergency landing using paper maps due to GPS attack: what happened
A plane carrying European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made an emergency landing at Plovdiv Airport due to GPS issues. The pilot had to rely on paper maps during the landing because of the failure of electronic navigation devices. The incident is being viewed as a possible interference from Russia.
After an hour of waiting in the air, the pilot decided to manually land using paper maps.
The planned meeting of Ursula von der Leyen with the Prime Minister of Bulgaria and a visit to the ammunition factory will take place only after the technical issues with the plane are resolved.
On August 26, a Russian reconnaissance plane was intercepted near Alaska
American fighter jets have intercepted a Russian reconnaissance IL-20 plane near Alaska for the fourth time in a week. Although the plane was spotted in the air defense zone, it remained in international airspace.
NORAD considers such incidents to be regular and claims that they do not pose a threat to national security. The command maintains a tracking system that detects and monitors all aircraft in the region to ensure safety.
Ursula von der Leyen is set to proceed to Plovdiv Airport after the emergency landing to fulfill her official program in Bulgaria. Meanwhile, a Russian fighter jet was again observed at the borders of Alaska, but was tracked by American fighters and remained in a safe international airspace.
